today
"Perseverance furthers.
To undertake something brings misfortune.
Without decreasing oneself,
One is able to bring increase to others."

No. 41, Decrease :

" Decrease combined with sincerity
Brings about supreme good fortune
Without blame.
One may be persevering in this.
It furthers one to undertake something.
How is this to be carried out?
One may use two small bowls for the sacrifice."

We were told by the Yi that a radical Reform is necessary, and a Decrease - which has either arrived or is coming - is probably why.

"Decrease does not under all circumstances mean something bad.  Increase and decrease come in their own time. What matters is to understand the time and not try to cover up poverty with empty pretense."  [Wilhelm]

In fact, Decrease may be a very good thing indeed, if you change your focus to what truly matters, and abandon that which is frivolous or unnecessary.

"Just as Alice had to shrink herself to enter Wonderland, we must shrink our view of ourselves to gain partnership with the higher powers."  [Walker]

...........

We received one changing line, Line 2.  We'll look at that tomorrow.

No. 21, Biting Through  /  Reform:

" Biting Through has success.
It is favorable to let justice be administered."

The third  hexagram in a row without changing lines.  First Temptation, then Dispersion, and now . . .  Reform.

Receiving Reform in its unchanging form means the situation is serious. A major, even radical Reform is needed.

"There could not be a more appropriate time to examine your character and determine the extent to which any delusions, rationalizations, or habits have usurped control of your judgment."  [R.L. Wing]

We don't want to look closely at our delusions and rationalizations - that's why we developed them in the first place.  But the Yi is stating, flat out, that you need to face up them, and do what it takes to Bite Through.  You will not be able to make real progress on your path until you do.

No. 59, Dispersion  /  Dissolution:

" Dispersion. Success.
The king approaches his temple.
It furthers one to cross the great water.
Perseverance furthers."

Another hexagram received without changing lines.  Hmmmm.  This Dispersion is likely to take awhile.

Something is separating you from those with whom you should be joined.  It is likely a rigid attitude - probably yours, but possibly someone else's.

Yesterday's hexagram said "If attitudes are correct and virtuous and no guile or cunning is involved to create imbalance, then this Temptation may well mark the birth of a new era."

To achieve the Dispersion necessary to enter this "new era,"  the Yi advises "cooperation in great general undertakings that set a high goal for the will of the people; in common concentration on this goal, all barriers dissolve  . . ."  [Wilhelm]

What "great general undertaking" can you join in?

No. 44, Coming To Meet  /  Temptation:

"Coming to Meet.  The maiden is poweful.
One should not marry such a maiden."

"The temptation to leave our path intrudes, either in reaction to the inferior nature of others, or because of internal pressure of our own desires. It is important to acknowledge this danger."  Carol Anthony

We received this hexagram without changing lines, which means this Temptation is likely to be beckoning to you for the indefinite future.  You need to identify it, right now, so you can deal with it correctly.

However, this may not represent a "danger" - it may be an opportunity.  R.L. Wing views receiving Temptation in its static form as representing "a dynamic interaction that finds example in the prolific coming together of positive and negatives. From such encounters, great things are born and order is established. This may represent a renaissance within, a sudden enlightenment, or an encounter of true significance in the outside world. "

"If attitudes are correct and virtuous and no guile or cunning is involved to create imbalance, then this Temptation
may well mark the birth of a new era."

No. 65,  Hospitalized  / Pain in the Gut.:

"You are sincere and are being obstructed.
Perseverance brings good fortune.
Or surgery.
We don't know which, yet."

Yes, you're right - I made that one up.  There are only 64 hexagrams.

I'm in the hospital with an intestinal obstruction (likely caused by previous surgeries.)  The Daily Yi will resume when I can get back to my regular routine.

Remember, you can do your own, personal consultations of the Yi, at any time, any place.  See the website, bookofchanges.org, for instructions.

No. 36,  Darkening of the Light:

"Darkening of the Light.  In adversity

It furthers one to be persevering.

" . . . here a man of dark nature is in a position of authority and brings harm to the wise and able man."  Wilhelm

Okay - we're going to assume here that you are the "wise and able man."  Who is the Yi warning you about?  Having received this message just a week ago, you obviously need to continue to be on guard around someone who has some authority or power over you.

"A correct attitude is most important.  If we fight against the darkness, we are swallowed by it and suffer great misfortune. If we try to persuade others that they must return to the light, we exhaust ourselves in vain." Brian Browne Walker

Are you being combative?  Are you wearing yourself out, trying to get someone to change their ways?

The Yi is trying to tell you:  You aren't going to win this one.  Face facts and move on.

The Receptive, Line 6:
The Receptive,  Line 6:

" Dragons fight in the meadow.
Their blood is black and yellow.
"

    Line 6 is telling you:
A conflict will come out in the open.

If this conflict continues, both parties will suffer.  Nobody is going to win this one.

Can you walk away from the fight?  Remember, the main message here was: be Receptive.

We'll look at the future of The Receptive  tomorrow.

The Receptive,   Line 2:

"Straight, square, great,
Without purpose,
Yet nothing remains unfurthered.
"

Being Receptive means following the laws of nature.  Things go where they are supposed to go, and things are formed to perfect form, without human effort or design.

Try to live your life that way now - no great purpose or goals.

Receptivity will take you farther than attempts to control ever would.

We'll look at Line 6 tomorrow.

No. 2,  The Receptive:

"The Receptive brings about sublime success.
Furthering through the perseverance of a mare.
If the superior man undertakes something and tries to lead,
He goes astray.
But if he follows, he finds guidance.
It is favorable to find friends in the west and south,
To fore go friends in the east and north.
Quiet perseverance brings good fortune.
"

Wing translates the title of this hexagram as Natural Response.  The main counsel of  this message is that you should be focusing on dealing with realities, rather than potentials

Brian Browne Walker's interpretation says that receiving this fundamental hexagram serves as strong encouragement to concentrate on your capacity to accept, to support, and to work without desiring special recognition.

This is, in essence, a continuation of the message to "keep still" and take only small steps.

We have two lines of specific advice on how to be Receptive, Lines 2 and 6.  We'll look at Line 2 tomorrow.

No. 22,  Grace:

"Grace has success.
In small matters
It is favorable to undertake something."

Are you able to "keep your toes still," as the Yi advised yesterday?

Grace is the future reading of Keeping Still.  This signals a time, not to rush off into a new endeavor, but to stop and spend some time focusing on the form of what you are creating.

You're not creating something right now, you say?  Think again. You are always creating something - even though what you're doing may be creating the same thing, over and over again.

Take some time to think about this.  What are you creating?  How could you change it?  A small adjustment may be all that's needed.to bring things into a pleasing alignment.

What small change can you make today?

No. 52,  Keeping Still / Mountain:

"
Keeping Still. Keeping his back still
So that he no longer feels his body.
He goes into his courtyard
And does not see his people.
No blame."

The Mountain is about "the problem of keeping a quiet heart." [Wilhelm]

     The Yi is telling you:
Do not let worries about what is past or anxiety over what will happen in the future dominate your thinking.

This message seems to specifically advise meditation:  Keep your back still, and shut out all external distractions.

And finally:  Your task in this life is to bring your true uniqueness into _expression.  There is "no blame" in not paying attention to other people's wants and needs every minute of the day.

We have one changing line, Line 1, which we'll look at tomorrow.

No. 55,  Abundance:

"Abundance has success.
The king attains abundance.
Be not sad.
Be like the sun at midday.
"

Are you following the Yi's advice to get out of that Darkening situation?

If you do, your reward in the future will be Abundance. You will go from a very low spot to the very highest  -  "like the sun at midday."

This hexagram is a combination of Thunder and Lightening, signaling a brief period of enlightenment and influence.  Realize that the sun only stays at its zenith for a moment. "Be not sad" when the brightness starts to fade.

What is the I Ching?

The symbol you see above is the bagua, the symbol of the I Ching for 5,000 years before it was "adopted" as the octagonal logo of the Dharma Iniative in the television series "Lost."

The I Ching, also known as the Yi Jing, or (in English) Book of Changes, is an oracle; a divination device that forms a pattern reflecting the forces at work in the Universe at a particular point in time.

This pattern, when viewed in the context of a concern or question, sends a message of timeless advice and insight.

Richard Wilhelm explained it this way in a footnote to his translation of Ta Chaun - The Great Treatise:

"The way in which the Book of Changes works can best be compared to an electrical circuit reaching into all situations.

"The circuit only affords the potentiality of lighting:  it does not give light.

"But when contact with a definite situation is established, the 'current' is activated, and the given situation is illumined."

Plug yourself in.

-------------------------------

The great Swiss pyschiatrist C.G. Jung, who was a serious student of the I Ching, said:

"The I Ching does not offer itself with proofs and results; it does not vaunt itself, nor is it easy to approach. Like a part of nature, it waits until it is discovered.

"It offers neither facts nor power, but for lovers of self-knowledge, of wisdom - if there be such - it seems to be the right book.  . . .

"He who is not pleased by it does not have to use it, and he who is against it is not obliged to find it true.

"Let it go forth into the world for the benefit of those who can discern its meaning."
