Today we're looking at the same hexagram we looked at yesterday, The Receptive, received by a different person, asking a different question. This illustrates a basic principle of the I Ching:  What the reading means is dependent on YOUR circumstances. Questioner No. 2 asked what forces would be at work, for her, in the next few months.

"The Receptive brings about sublime success,
Furthering through perseverance of a mare.
If the superior man undertakes something and tries to lead,
He goes astray;
But if he follows, he finds guidance.
It is favorable to find friends in the west and south,
To forgo friends in the east and north.
Quiet perseverance brings good fortune."

The Image:
"The Earth's condition is receptive devotion.
Thus the superior woman who has breadth of character
Carries the world."

This is telling her that for the next few months, it is a good idea for her to be receptive, rather than aggressive.  Wing translates the title of this hexagram as Natural Response, and says the main counsel of this hexagram is that  she should be focusing on dealing with realities of her life, rather than  potentials. She needs to concern herself with the basics.

Anthony and Moog call this hexagram Nature, and translate the first line as "Nature is great through its interpenetration with the Cosmic Consciousness; it discerns what feels harmonious and allows that to lead, with the firmness of a mare."  As they explain it, there is an inner truth that is imprinted in everything that exists - humans and animals, and plants, rocks, and the earth, as well.  When each form allows that inner truth to guide it, it is in harmony with the whole.

She needs to be receptive to that inner truth, for herself and all that surrounds her.

She had two changing lines, 3 and 5., and they are important to her particular situation. Line 3 says:

"Hidden lines.
One is able to remain persevering.
If by chance you are in the service of a king
Seek not works, but bring to completion."

"Hidden lines" means there is more going on here than she can realize at present. According to Anthony and Moog, there  is a greater Cosmic Plan at work, and in order to fulfill this plan, she is meant to pay special attention to cooperating  with Nature.

Questioner No. 2 is a very creative person, an actress and writer.  Among the gifts Nature bestows is creativity. Unless she is open to receiving this creativity, and makes no claim to being the source of this creativity herself, the chi energy that would have been transferred to her by the Universe will be cut off. She needs to just flip the switch to the "open" position, and let the energy flow in.

Line 5:

"A yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune."

Yellow is the color of the mean, or middle, and of clarity.  The "lower garments"  refer to the basics - her inner truth. So, remaining grounded in her center, which has a close connection to the earth, will bring about supreme good fortune.  (Or - she could go shopping for a sunburst thong. Her choice.)

You are the psychic!
Today we have a reading that illustrates two basic principles of the I Ching:

1. When you use the I Ching as a form of divination,
YOU are the psychic, or "fortune-teller." YOU are the one making the connection with the Universe when you throw the coins.  You are asking the question, and it is your chi energy that is working in the coins when they are thrown.

2. What the reading means is dependent on YOUR circumstances. The advice only makes sense when you relate it to what is happening in YOUR life. A reader such as myself can help you look at the ways in which the words have been interpreted over the centuries, and suggest ways that they may be applied to your life, but it is your insight that is at work in identifying the meaning.

I received requests for personal readings from two members of our group, and both received the same basic message from their toss of the coins: No. 2, The Receptive.  Today, we'll look at how this illustrates the first principle by looking at the question posed by Questioner No. 1.

His question, when he tossed the coins, was,"Why did I receive two very different readings from psychics? One told me that what  I was doing in life was correct. I would succeed. One told me that because of a past life, I will suffer pain."

Let's look at how the Yi answered this complex question.

No. 2, The Receptive:

"The Receptive brings about sublime success,
Furthering through perseverance of a mare.
If the superior man undertakes something and tries to lead,
He goes astray;
But if he follows, he finds guidance.
It is favorable to find friends in the west and south,
To forego friends in the east and north.
Quiet perseverance brings good fortune."

The Image:
"The Earth's condition is receptive devotion.
Thus the superior man who has breadth of character
Carries the world."

Receiving this message in response to his question about the differing psychics means the first psychic was right -  he will have success in life - IF he is receptive to the messages the Universe is sending him, through the I Ching.

Wing translates the title of this hexagram as Natural Response, and says the main counsel of receiving this message now, is that he should be focusing on dealing with realities, rather than  potentials. It is a time for him to concern himself with the basics in life: food, shelter, health.

Brian Browne Walker's interpretation says that receiving this fundamental hexagram serves as a strong encouragement to concentrate on his capacities to accept, to support, and to work without desiring special recognition.  This is very similar to the message counseling steadfastness at "the post of duty" that he received not long ago.

Tomorrow we'll look at the situation posed by the other questioner, and what this answer means to her.

Revolution / Renewal / Change

The Daily Yi

No. 49, Revolution  /  Renewal  /  Changing

Revolution. On your own day

You are believed.

Supreme success,

Furthering through perseverance

Remose disappears."

The Image:

"Fire in the lake; the image of revolution.

Thus the superior man

Sets the calendar in order

and makes the seasons clear."

.If you've been thinking that now is the time to make a change, you're right.

What's more, others will listen to you - and believe you! -  bringing about "supreme success."  And - this will allow you to let go of regrets over what has happened in the past.

This does not mean there will not be conflict.  Quite the contrary. The influences at work here are exact opposites: fire and water. The analogy here is of the "battle" of the dark forces of winter being overcome by the "light" force of spring.

That's why you - as the "superior man" - are advised to "set the calendar in order and make the seasons clear."  It's spring.  Time to clear away the old, dead patterns of the past, and allow the new, vigorous growth to appear.

What area of your life is crying out for this kind of change?

The Yi has some specific advice on working through this "revolutionary" change; lines 1, 4, and 6 were changing lines. We'll look at line 1 tomorrow.

What is the I Ching?

The symbol you see above is the bagua, the symbol of the I Ching for 5,000 years before it was "adopted" as the octagonal logo of the Dharma Iniative in the television series "Lost."

The I Ching, also known as the Yi Jing, or (in English) Book of Changes, is an oracle; a divination device that forms a pattern reflecting the forces at work in the Universe at a particular point in time.

This pattern, when viewed in the context of a concern or question, sends a message of timeless advice and insight.

Richard Wilhelm explained it this way in a footnote to his translation of Ta Chaun - The Great Treatise:

"The way in which the Book of Changes works can best be compared to an electrical circuit reaching into all situations.

"The circuit only affords the potentiality of lighting:  it does not give light.

"But when contact with a definite situation is established, the 'current' is activated, and the given situation is illumined."

Plug yourself in.

-------------------------------

The great Swiss pyschiatrist C.G. Jung, who was a serious student of the I Ching, said:

"The I Ching does not offer itself with proofs and results; it does not vaunt itself, nor is it easy to approach. Like a part of nature, it waits until it is discovered.

"It offers neither facts nor power, but for lovers of self-knowledge, of wisdom - if there be such - it seems to be the right book.  . . .

"He who is not pleased by it does not have to use it, and he who is against it is not obliged to find it true.

"Let it go forth into the world for the benefit of those who can discern its meaning."
